Capex and Project Planning
Investment cases inside the plan
Capital spend decided in a spreadsheet and typed into the plan is where the cash forecast goes wrong.
The problem
Investment cases are built in templates, approved in meetings, and then re entered as a single capex line. Depreciation starts on the wrong date, phasing slips, and the cash forecast carries spend that was deferred months ago. Project managers and finance hold different views of what is committed.
What good looks like
Case to plan without retyping
An approved case becomes plan lines automatically.
Depreciation and cash derived
Asset class, in service date and phasing drive both.
Committed against planned
What is contracted, what is approved, what is still an idea.
A portfolio view
Prioritise within an envelope and see the P&L and cash effect of each choice.
How we approach it
Step 1
Standardise the investment case template and approval stages.
Step 2
Build the capex model in SAP Analytics Cloud with asset class rules from S/4HANA.
Step 3
Connect project and asset actuals so the plan tracks delivery.
Step 4
Run it with the next investment round.
Standard content we start from
SAP ships capex planning inside Integrated Financial Planning (multi year asset acquisition at granular level with depreciation derived), Portfolio Financial Planning for SAP S/4HANA Cloud (project budget requests aligned to the portfolio hierarchy) and Rapid Capital Planning, all for SAP Analytics Cloud.
We start from the capex module, then add the client's case template and approval stages, the committed versus planned view, and cash phasing that moves with the project, which the packages leave to the client.
